What to wear for your family portrait session
Choosing outfits for your session can sometimes be the hardest part of the process! The clothes you choose have a huge visual impact in your images. When picking out what to wear you need to think about comfort, color, and how you can accessorize.
If you are not comfortable in your clothes it will come through in your images. I like to tell moms to pick out what they are going to wear first. Make sure you feel amazing in your outfit! If you are going to wear a dress or a skirt make sure to wear shorts underneath. You will be sitting down in some of your images and you don’t want to have to worry about flashing anyone lol After you have your outfit picked out you can coordinate the rest of the fam’s. Make sure they are comfortable in their clothes too! If your child hates hats, dresses, colors, long sleeves, whatever, don’t dress them in those things. Pick out a few options for them and let them choose. A comfortable kid is a happy kid!
Coordinate the colors of your clothing but don’t over-match. Earth tones, pastels, neutrals or even jewel tones will have the best results on camera. You want to go for a cohesive look, but not matchy-matchy. You’ll be placed in different combinations throughout the session, so you’ll want to think about the shirts/sweaters you are wearing. If two people are wearing similar color shirts and you put them next to each other that won’t offer enough contrast. If you have someone wearing a pattern, like plaid for example, you can match the rest of the outfits to the different colors in the plaid.
Accessorize! Wear layers for movement and accessories for interest. Necklaces, hats, jackets and sweaters will add a little extra spice to your photos.
Just remember when choosing your outfits that you will be sitting, standing, running, skipping, jumping and twirling! Choose shoes that are comfortable and easy to walk in. You’ll most likely be out in nature, so be prepared to get a little dirty! Finally be prepared to have fun while looking fabulous!
